Tooth fairy cushion: handmade Christmas present

This tooth fairy pillow can either be given to a boy or a girl. Just adapt the fabric pattern and embellishments you use.

Materials

  • two 8 inch squares of cotton fabric
  • one 3 inch square in felt
  • 15 inch ribbon 1/2 in to 3/4 in wide for the hanger
  • 45 inch x 2 inch wide bias tape for the border
  • a small piece of white felt for the tooth
  • small 3 inch store bought organza bag
  • embellishments of your choice: buttons, felt cutouts, sequins, bows and the like
  • download tooth template (pdf)

Instructions

Cut two 8 inch squares.

Cut a 3 inch square in felt.

Fold it in half and pin.

Cut out on the corners as per picture.

The pocket is done.

Print the tooth template (pdf).

Cut the template around the tooth not too close to the line and place it over the felt. Hold tight with your fingers and start cutting along the lines.

Make sure you don’t move the felt.

Your tooth is ready to be stitched.

Place the tooth at an angle over the pocket.

Add some embellishments to the cushion. I chose to add a felt flower made out of cutouts.

There are many ideas you can do with felt flowers. This is just one very simple flowers but you can do more involved flowers too. Check out my tutorial on felt flower embellishment.

Play with placement of flower and pocket before you start stitching.

Stitch tooth and sequins to pocket and stitch all flower layers together.

Pin pocket to square and handstitch flower to square.

Place both squares wrong sides facing together and stitch all around the edges at 1/4 in from the edge leaving 1 1/2 inch opening to insert the polyfill.

Fill in the cushion.

Now add the bias tape to bind the edges.

Pin around.

I did mitered corners. This tutorial explains clearly how to do mitered corners (pdf).

Stitch all along. Turn bias over and pin again.

Top stitch around.

Add ribbon to hang cushion. I cut the ribbon edge in a funky way and then lightly applied heat with a match to stop it from fraying.

To hold in place stitch a button through all layers of ribbon and fabric.

The cushion is done.

Insert the bag in the pocket.

Voilà! Another handmade gift ready for giving.
