Strips galore quilts – video tutorial

It’s strip time.

These 3 tutorials will show you how to make quilts using strips of fabric, either scraps or coordinated ones.

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Hidden wells with 4 strips and ombre colours – video tutorial

Hidden wells is one of my favourite quilts. This technique was developed by Mary Ellen Hopkins in 1989 for her Hidden wells quilt. It can be done with a different number of strips in different or equal widths.

This time I’ve tried playing with colour to see what I came up with.

What do you think?

Fabric collection

I made this block as Michael Miller Ambassador and used their silky Cotton Couture solids in Cherry, Clementine, Apricot and Orange  from the Michael Miller Colour wheel fat quarter bundle I received..

Check out other fabric combinations on the video.

Sewing circles isn’t easy. There’re many ways to sew circles and mostly it involves sewing curves and using many pins or appliqué.

But this this video tutorial demonstrates a different technique that involves using fusible interfacing.

Vídeo tutorial: make a block out of 5 strips of fabric

A while ago I made a similar block with 4 fabric strips of the same width. This time I tried with 5 fabric strips of different widths and this is one of the blocks I got.

The choice of fabrics is important. It works best with high contrasting fabrics and colours.

Another experimental block or blocks this week.

I’m looking to give it a name. Some fellow quilters have suggested a number of them: Half stripped, The Zipper block, Ripper Zipper, Reflections, Chameleon, Disguised, Topsy turvey, Arrows, Tricuadra, The Envelope, Flip-a-Dee-doo-da!, My joy, Strip Tease, Robbins of life, Directions.

This uses the half square triangle (HST) technique again. The results are quite interesting. This is a block that is very versatile and has many possibilities.

High contrasting fabrics work best for this type of blocks.
