iPad slipcase with pocket tutorial

Materials

  • 2 fat quarters
  • some felt
  • 7/8 in double folded bias tape – store bought
  • stranded cotton to match felt
  • batting for quilts
  • velcro

Pocket

For the pocket cut a rectangle 5 3/4 in x 9 1/2 in (or 5 3/4 in  x 9 in if using the tighter fit dimensions).

Hem both sides of the pocket, top and bottom, and stitch.

Apple embellishment

Draw the Apple icon on a piece of paper and stick it to the felt piece with cellotape. Cut around the markings. This makes cutting easier and the results are smoother.

Center the apple it in the pocket rectangle and stitch around it using running stitch.

Slipcase

Cut 1 rectangle from each fabric with the following dimensions: 22 1/4 in x 9 1/2 in. For a tighter fit make it 22 1/4 in x 9 in.

Cut a slightly larger batting rectangle.

Lay the pieces on top of each other placing the batting in the middle.

Fold the rectangle in half leaving one side stick out by about 2 inches (see picture). This will be the flap of the iPad slipcase.

Place the pocket in place. Pin in position aligning the pocket to the bottom fold. Stitch bottom of the pocket to large rectangle.

Place velcro in place and stitch in place.

Stitch all around the rectangle.

Add some binding to the top of the rectangle just above the velcro piece (see picture).

Rounded corners (optional)

If you want rounded corners, draw them on the flap of the slipcase using a glass and when you stitch around.

Trim off excess fabric and batting.

Apply velcro to the inside of the flap (see picture).

Fold and pin sides together but do not stitch both sides together yet.

Pin bias tape around and stitch leaving 1/4 seam allowance.

Stitch bias and both sides of the bag together now.

Finish stitching the binding by hand.
