This is the fourth block in the Mysteries Down Under quilt.

Contrary wife -not fond of the name- is a classic 9-patch block.  I came across the block when I made a Farmer’s wife sampler quilt a few years ago.

It’s a quick and easy block perfect for beginners. It can be made as a one single block quilt or as part of the Mysteries Down Under quilt.

Check out the different designs you can make with just one single block at the end of the video.

Block 3 – Starburst quilt block – Mysteries Down Under quilt

This is the third block in the Mysteries Down Under quilt.

The video tutorial demonstrates foundation piecing using freezer paper. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn foundation piecing with this super easy block.

If you don’t have any freezer paper you can either do regular foundation piecing or just traditional piecing. Get the templates below.

You need to make 4 pieces to make one block.

How to make a Starburst block

Download the Starburst templates

The pdf contains 1 template for foundation piecing and the templates for traditional piecing.

For regular foundation piecing, print the template 4 times.

For freezer paper foundation piecing, trace the paper piecing template once onto freezer paper and reuse for the 4 pieces.

For traditional piecing use the templates to cut 4 pieces of each shape.

Coordinated fabrics

Aqua and porcelain.

By the way, the blocks aren’t assembled in order. So as you make them, put them away in a safe place until all of them are done.

Snowball is a classic block and it’s perfect for beginners. Check the colour below if you’re using the suggested palette.
