Do you have a lot of fabric scraps? This is your project then. I recommend using stronger interfacing for the ears, something you’d use for a handbag, to keep them up longer.
I made this softie a long time ago but it’s still cute. It is easy enough as your first softie.
This is a very funny chicken softie. The pieces a very large so it’s very easy and quick to make. It makes a great gift all year round too.
I thought of recycling my Easter crafts. All of them can be made in an afternoon. Older children should be able to help out too!
Tip: not in the tutorial but if you want the ears to continue to stick up after a while, use strong fusible interfacing, the type used for handbags.

I liked the chicken so much I made two and gave one away! Great idea to use your fabric scraps too.

Do you need a project for the Easter break?
Totally unrelated to Easter but if you’re in the mood of sewing softies during the Easter break, here’s the cutest one I’ve ever made and it is a free pattern:
Based on Easter basket sewing and fabric basket tutorial.
- fabric scraps
- 2 buttons
- 1 pom pom
- fusible interfacing
Follow the fabric basket tutorial to make up the patchwork basket and handles.
My basket has only one handle. My handle is made out of one strip of fabric measuring 2 1/2 in x 9 in and has fusible interfacing.
After assembling the patchwork and sewing the basket, add the embroidery.
If adding a bunny’s tail, stitch now.
I drew my own ears but you can download ears and embroidery pattern(pdf) from disdressed.
You will need 2 pieces of fusible interfacing, 2 of facing fabric and 2 of back fabric.
Iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the front fabric. Sew around ears with both fabrics right fabric facing together. Leave bottom opening to turn inside out.
Attach ears to basket as per photo below. Sew handle in the same way.
Sew the lining following fabric basket tutorial.
