My quilting tools

You’ve asked me many times before what rulers I use, what mat appears on my videos, what sewing machine I use.

I don’t have lots of special quilting tools and I like to use fewer of them even. I believe you don’t need to have lots of tools to be able to quilt.

I have compiled a list of my quilting “toys” in case you’re interested.

I’ve also included the thread I use. I find it to be very good and really well priced.

Sewing machine and accessories

Janome Memory Craft 8200

I still own my old Janome that I bought in 2009. I keep it in case I need to take my current machine to be serviced.

Add a quarter ruler

Add a quarter ruler. This is a perfect ruler for foundation paper piecing. It’s a time saver!

Rotary cutter

I only own one rotary cutter, a 45 mm Olfa rotary cutter. I bought it in 2009 and it’s still going.

Self healing cutting mat

Calibre Art cutting mat, 24″ x 36″. This is my current mat. I needed to replace my old Olfa and I wanted one that didn’t emit any strong plastic odours. This mat is odourless plus it can be bent and won’t lose its shape.

Olfa cutting mat, 18″ x 24″. I still use the old one from time to time.

Ironing mat

Wool ironing mat.

My mat is 13 1/2″ x 13 1/2″, perfect for most block sizes.

I find ironing mats most convenient. You can just place it on top of your cutting mat as needed. The mat is very thick and won’t ruin your cutting mat.

I almost exclusively use Connecting threads cotton thread now. I used Gutermann for many years but I found Connecting threads to be quite good and a lot cheaper.

Travel iron

Head pins

Glass-head pins Akari

These pins are beautifully made and you will see them on my videos.

Warm crochet scissors.

Quilter’s pencil.
