What if quilt block – an experiment

This block has so much potential that I have made it before, twice with different colour schemes.

Fabric needs

  • Ten 10″ x 1 1/2″ strips in assorted prints or colours
  • One 10 inch square piece of coordinated fabric

This tutorial makes 4 HSTs which, arranged in different ways, make different blocks. Each block can make one or more quilt layouts.

For the tutorial I used Michael Miller’s collection Strata and matching Cotton Couture solids from the new solid collection colours.

I hadn’t used Cotton Couture until now, but I quite like the fabric, it’s silkier than other brands of solids I’ve used in the past. And it has a huge range of colours to choose from.

Strips

Each block has 4 pieces and you can put them together in endless ways.

So how did I make this block?

Have a look at a different colour scheme for the same block.

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Turnabout patchwork technique

This is one of my favourite techniques. So much so that I’ve written a book about it.

This technique is about playing with blocks, about trying things out, about what ifs.

How to sew, slice and turn a block

If you like disappearing blocks check out my book Turnabout patchwork. It’s a book about slicing and turning blocks like this one.

Striped fabric block, Turnabout patchwork blog hop

Turnabout patchwork book - striped fabric block

Striped fabric is awesome. Do you agree?

I love the minimalist look of my Shells quilt. You can make this quilt in a weekend easily.

Sometimes you only need to use half square triangles and use the fabric print to do most of the work. Stripes are great for this. Chunky stripes look great but finer stripes are great too.

You’ll find Shells and the 3 other patterns in this block in Turnabout patchwork.

So you can see all the variations in a real project we’re joined by Gail of Quilting GailJulie of Running Stitch QuiltsLinda of The Quilting BikerSarah Scott of Piccolo StudioCheryl of QuilterChic and Stephanie of Steph Jacobson Design.
