Striped hexagon quilt blocks – video tutorial

Hexagons are some of my favourite blocks. They’re quick and easy, they can be made with fabric scraps.

My book Turnabout Patchwork

“Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist” is all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Storm at sea quilt

I know you’ve been wanting to make this quilt for a long time but it looks a bit intimidating or you tried and it didn’t work out.

Well, what about trying again but this time using foundation piecing? With foundation piecing your blocks are very accurate so why not, just take the plunge into foundation piecing!

Mini broken dishes quilt block – Tiny quilt QAL

Broken dishes is a classic block. It looks pretty cute in this size.

The block finished size is 3″ x 3″.

The video demonstrates how to make the block with foundation piecing. In such small sizes I find it’s a lot easier to get an accurate block that using traditional piecing. But traditional templates are also available on my Etsy shop.

I used regular copy paper but in small sizes it can be a bit thick.

You can use special paper for foundation piecing if you prefer.

Let’s get to it!

Note: I recently started to use an Add a quarter ruler, the yellow ruler in the video, after some followers recommended it and I have to say it’s a true time saver.

Stretched stars quilt block – video tutorial

Stretched stars is a very easy do make quilt.

It’s also perfect for fabric scraps.

How to make a Stretched stars quilt block

This method “wastes” a bit of fabric but it doesn’t need to, you can make a half square triangle at the same time with the excess fabric and use it on another quilt or use the HSTs on the back of the quilt.
