How to make a disappearing hourglass block

Learn to make this block in 2 minutes:

Correction: the initial 4 half square triangles need to be trimmed to 4 1/2 inch square.

Block size

The block is 7 1/2 inches (7 inches finished).

Materials

  • Two 5 inch squares in green
  • Two 5 inch squares in red

or

  • Two 5 inch squares in one colour
  • One 5 inch square in a contrasting colour
  • One 5 inch square in a third contrasting colour

By using a variety of fabric and colour combinations you can make strikingly looking quilts quite easily.

  1. I don’t know Celia if the technique is the same. I have seen it done on various blogs through Pinterest so I just gave it a try and quite liked it.

  2. Celia, I looked for the tutorial on the Missouri site and it looks a bit different. It looks like on that site they use a technique that produces 4 half square triangles and I only do 2 at a time. And the starter squares are layer cakes. The rest looks more or less the same.
