Warning: This triangle has a Y seam! I don’t like Y seams. They still intimidate me though I think that I’m learning to tame them.

Note: as Karin just pointed out, if the pieces are sewn in a different order, then there’s no Y seam.

In spite of the Y seam this triangle is beautiful. And it is an easy one… if you’re paper piecing.

I only have a few things to point out for this triangle.

I used Susan Gatewood’s paper foundation free pattern.

If you haven’t done paper piecing before and want to try, this is not the easiest block to start with but it’s not the hardest either. Maybe try with a simpler block to get the idea, like the one from my foundation piecing video tutorial.

Cut your fabric pieces.

Assemble as per pattern.

Put all the pieces together as per pattern diagram.

This is when I should have realised that I could sew all the short pieces together and add the longest thin piece last.

Instead I stitched the pieces in the pattern in alphabetical order without giving it any thought and then I noticed I had to deal with a Y seam! And I thought, oh no, there we go, I can see it’s not going to work, blah blah blah.

Why I didn’t see it earlier that it wasn’t necessary to assemble the block in order? I guess my quilting experience is limited. This is my second complex quilt. My first one was Farmer’s wife quilt sampler. Oh well, it’s not like it didn’t work out in the end.

So then I thought, what did I read about Y seams? Ah, yes, that you have to start sewing from where the seams join towards the outside. So I aligned both pieces as per picture.

And stitched from the join towards the outside.

Voila!

Then I noticed that I should have started 1/4 in from the join so I unpicked the 1/4 inch.

This is the part where it gets tricky. You need to align both seams together without any puckering. I just had to readjust the alignment several times before I was ready to stitch. I think that the paper helps because the fabric doesn’t stretch as much.

Again from the join to the outside I stitched along the line.

I think this is one of the few times I haven’t had to unpick a Y seam.

Not too bad.

I pressed well and scanned.

This triangle completes Row B. Next block will be C01 which looks pretty easy to me.
