Block 7: faux cathedral window variation – Textured 4-patch quilt

Block type: 4-patch

Block size: 10 1/2 inches

Colour scheme: reds, greens and neutrals

Texture/fabric manipulation: faux cathedral window variation

Cut:

  • two floral 5 1/2 in squares
  • four 3 in squares in pale green
  • twelve 3 in square in cream

Making the faux cathedral window variation

Cut all the squares.

Place one cream square.

Press two cream squares on the diagonal and place on the cream square as per picture below.

Do this for each of the 4 squares.

Now place all the block squares as per picture below.

Start stitching the pale green square and the cream square together paying special attention to the corners so that they meet perfectly.

Now stitch top and bottom pale green/cream pieces into a square as per picture below.

Now stitch all the pieces together.

Stitch the corner as per picture below.

Press the block well.

Now fold out each opening.

Your block will look like the picture below.

Now top stitch each fold as close to the edge as possible.

This quilt has 16 x 10 1/2 in blocks.

Each block is a 4-patch block in greens and reds. The fabric manipulation is made in a cream fabric.

  1. Would have liked a picture of the whole quilt. Will use this technique for a large fancy block as part of the backing for a stripper quilt…….. very cute idea…….thanks!!!
